Love is a House

This past Thursday, the Omi's signed the final paperwork to close on our first home. It is a nice cozy, family home in the northern part of Dayton, Ohio. I want to thank everyone who chipped in and lent a hand from all over the country. Our family and friends really came through for us. I definitely want to thank my brother from the same mother, Dolo, and my father in law, the good Good Doctor Zhivago, for definitely looking out.

If I have to thank anyone however, after I thank the ancestors for coming through for us once again, I have to thank my wonderful wife. She is the accountant/number cruncher who can actually make a dollar out of 15 cents. She budgeted, flattened, stretched, saved, and pinched every penny I brought home. Not to mention the fact that she hustled her wares at the the local farmers market. The Queen does her thing.

As we worked several hours over the weekend renovating the place, something hit me. I went ahead and painted LOVE on the wall. That Force MD's song popped into my head. You know the one, “Love is a House.” As a youngblood, I loved the Force MD's. The ill thing was that I found this song to be corny. I sang it anyway but I felt the lyrics were just straight bubblegum. As the song played in my head, it dawned on me. Love is a house.

Buying a home is just the tip of the iceberg. One has to go in there and get dirty. Walls have to be repainted, furniture replaced, carpet pulled up, and the front and back lawns have to be redone. Like any worthwhile relationship, there is work to be a done. Love is work. Buying a home and moving in is work. Our new purchase is a manifestation of our love.

“This is what I wanted,” my wife called out, “to work on our home together.”
